Abstract

The causes of acne are puberty, infection due to squeezing pimples, allergies to food, climate, air pollution, food and drink, stress levels, lifestyle, skin type, heredity and use of cosmetics. The bacteria that causes acne is Propionibacterium acnes. Examples of plants that can be used as traditional medicine are aloe vera and yam. The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibitory ability of the ethanolic extract of aloe vera, yam and a combination (aloe vera and yam) against Propionibacterium acnes bacteria using the disc diffusion method. The samples used were aloe vera and yam plants with pure culture of Propionibacterium acnes. Ethanol extracts of aloe vera, yam, and the combination have antibacterial effectiveness at a concentration of 25% with each inhibition zone of aloe vera ethanol extract of 8.7 mm, ethanol extract of yam bean with 9.8 mm, and the combined extract of 9.3 mm. This is because aloe vera contains lignin, phenol and anthraquinone substances, and yam contains triterpenoids, flavonoids and saponins that can inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. The results of the Two Way-Anova test showed (p<0.05) which means that the ethanolic extracts of aloe vera, yam and the combination have different inhibitory powers at each concentration.

Keywords : Aloe vera, Jicama, Propionibacterium acnes, disc diffusion, antibacterial.
